What’s in a name? Apparently a roman numeral ten.
September 12 is fast approaching. The “Apple Special Event” is set for 10 a.m. PDT. I will be one of many watching the keynote at my office, curious to learn what is next for Apple. Months worth of rumors will be either squashed or verified.
During the keynote, three smartphones are expected to launch. TechCrunch reports, “two iPhone models are set to be named the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus”, according to the leak. It seems the third iPhone device, referred to as iPhone 8 for months, will be called iPhone X in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the iPhone. According to MacRumors, “a last-minute leak from Apple’s own iOS 11 golden master version suggests the device will instead be called the iPhone X.”
Also recently leaked, more information regarding facial recognition. MacRumors wrote, “Facial recognition has been rumored to be replacing Touch ID entirely on the OLED iPhone X, and today developer Guilherme Rambo shared a few glimpses into the setup process of the all-new “Face ID” feature.” The article continues and notes that Rambo tweeted images showing the settings and preference screen for Face ID. Apple Pay was missing, however, likely because Apple Pay is not available in Brazil and he was using a Brazilian Apple ID.
Sales of iPhones have decreased over the past few months, leaving us to wonder what the demand will be for the three new iPhone devices. 141 million iPhones were in use in the U.S at the start of July and 48 million of them were last year’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. Using research from Statista, Business Insider reported those numbers meant the remaining 93 million people were using iPhones that were at least two years old. The recent decline in sales is likely people waiting to upgrade after the announcement. Lucky for Apple, we are ready for new phones.
We are down to hours now. After months of rumors, all of our questions will be answered. The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X are about to become a reality.
